Experience
For the past two years I have taught Western, World, and American history courses at Georgia Highlands College in Rome, Georgia. My love for history began when I was in middle school. One of my teacher’s went on a bike tour of Europe and shared his slides with our class upon his return. One of the slides was of the shoreline of Albania and he told us of the Communist rulers’ restrictions of not allowing outsiders into the country. Something about that story sparked my interest in history which continues to this day. It also emphasizes the influence a powerful teacher can have on a student. That teacher and event have influenced my philosophy of teaching history. Many times history classes consist of learning facts and dates. History isn’t boring and I strive to make it come alive for my students. I want my students to fully participate in the class, to look for cause and effect of events, patterns throughout history and I challenge them to form well thought out questions, discuss ideas and enable them to dig below the surface story presented in the textbook. It has been my experience that students tend to gain a greater appreciation and love for a subject when the teacher conveys a passion for that area of study. That passion opens minds to develop the critical thinking skills needed in our complex world. A former student wrote on an evaluation of my class, “I liked everything about this class. I was nervous about taking it because I have never understood history. I have learned more in this one history class than any of my other classes combined. This was the best class that I had this semester.” In my opinion, history is storytelling, a fascinating, absorbing, and at times a tragic and heart wrenching tale of human endeavor, struggle, defeat and triumph. Every day that I teach, I look forward to the challenge of helping students learn to respect and value the importance of the subject and yes, perhaps even come to love it!
